Frequently Asked Questions

When doing a roof I highly recommend using a company that has a good track record and also does roofs only. General contractors, landscaping or gutter companies usually have one good specialty and it is not roofing. Some roofing companies will also do gutters and other minor things but again I would stick with roofers for your roofing needs.

Don’t sign any paperwork until you have everything in writing. It is always a good idea to call the BBB to check out the company and also contact references. It is a good idea not to pay any money down a good established financially stable roofing company will not ask for any money until the roof is complete. Most roofs will only take one to four days to finish and the roofing company should be able to wait until then to be paid.

It is always a good idea to tell the roofing company where you would like the material delivered. Most typical area is either on the left or right side of the driveway. The supply house will not put it on the actual yard (grassy area) unless they have a signed waiver from the homeowner.

When composition shingles are torn off and the felt is showing it is okay to put another layer of felt over that and then begin installing the new shingles. (Just make sure that the roofer walks the perimeter and makes sure there are no rotten wood /decking.) The advantage of putting new felt over existing felt it is an additional layer of protection.

Shingles come in all sizes, shapes and weights. It is always better to go with a shingle that fits your neighborhood and code restrictions. There are 20 year 3-tab shingles and 25 year 3-tab shingles. There are 30 year laminates up to lifetime laminate shingles. You also then have your specialty higher end roofing products, metal, barrel tiles and synthetic roofing materials. The most widely used manufactures are GAF/Elk, Tamko and Owens Corning.
